Solaris 10 x86 installation completion
Well what do you know. I came in yesterday to see how the installation was going. It was done. The system booted up fine and all the old settings/home dirs were still around. The Java Desktop (JDS) seems to be a bit slow. The problem is that it probably (java in general) requires lots of memory. The CDE doesn't run as sluggishly as the JDS. I dont think this sluggishness was present in Solaris 8. On a P-III with 128M one shouldn't expect much I guess.
It looks like the JDS has its roots in the Unix/Linux Gnome Desktop but I think it stands on its own. The appearance has a professional look and is stylish and a pleasure to use. Of course it cannot be compared to the Apple Mac OS X GUI but for a Unix desktop it is pretty good. More on the GUI stuff when I post about solaris 10 installation on a sun ultra.
